17 Apr Debate on CAP Reform @ the EU Parliament
The European Network for Food Sovereignty and another CAP (FoodSovCap) and MEP Marc Tarabella (S&D), would like to invite you to a debate on CAP reform in the afternoon of May 3rd at the European Parliament (ASP 5 G 3). More information on the programme can be found in attachment and at www.europeanfooddeclaration.org/missingoption.
Besides Marc Tarabella, the MEPs José Bové (Greens/EFA), Patrick Le Hyaric (GUE/NGL) and Janusz Wojciechowski (ECR) will be present to give their opinion on the CAP reform and its impact on food sovereignty and the conservation of natural resources.
This spring, the European Parliament will decide its position on the European Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) post 2013. Current proposals will not guarantee just incomes for farmers and fair prices for consumers. Nor will these proposals result in ecologically sustainable agriculture.
FoodSovCap, a broad coalition of more than 100 European organisations elaborated a missing option for the CAP based on the food sovereignty principles of the European Food Declaration signed by more than 300 organizations. According to FoodSovCap crucial changes to the CAP are needed which include regulation of agricultural production and markets, a less important role for direct payments, making the food chain fairer and more transparent, making the food and agricultural system more sustainable and maintain public funding for rural policy.
